RIVER MARKET COMMUNITY GRANT

A strong community is the foundation of vibrant culture and healthy commerce. As the new managers of River Market, we’re inspired by our meetings with New Westminster residents. People love this city and want to make it better. In this spirit, we have created the Community Grant program. A series of small grants will be awarded to projects that nurture and strengthen our community from the ground up.

There is no limit to what your community project could look likt. For example, a grant could be used to start a community garden on your block or a mini-festival to bring neighbors together. If you have an idea for making our community better, we’d like to hear from you. All projects must take place in New Westminster.

We are excited to announce the 2008 River Market Community Grant Recipients:

12th Street Public Art Initiative

Working with city staff, this project team of local residents is exploring ways to celebrate neighbourhood characteristics and history through public art on Twelfth Street.  Their first initiative, titled "Step Up to 12th Street" and "Write on 12th Street", seeks creative ways to incorporate mosaics and poetry into the Twelfth Street sidewalks.

Imagination, Arts and Media (I AM) Youth Arts Program

This program, part of Massey Theatre, supports youth in their exploration of the arts and creative self expression.  Youths in our community are creating art all over this city and I AM endeavours to guide, encourage, and provide a forum for their artistic talent.  This spring the youth troupe has created performances for presentation to the greater community.
